About DPL

The overall responsibilities of the department include the creation and implementation of a homesteading program, the commercial leasing and permitting of idle public lands, the settling of land claims (e.g., through the Land Compensation Program), and designating public land parcels to other government agencies for the fulfillment of the public purpose.

Our Mission

Our mission, as trustees for public lands in the Commonwealth, is to incorporate our strategic land use plan into effective management, use, disposition, and development of public lands to promote cultural and economic growth for the benefit of our present and future generations of the Commonwealth.

Our Commitment

We recognize that our successes at the Department of Public Lands are the people that work here and our clients who lease public lands. Therefore, as an organization we are committed to our employees, helping them manage and develop their career and by making the DPL a great place to work.

The department is also committed to its clients. All of our employees have personal objectives which they fulfill to ensure that a relationship with the indigenous people of the CNMI and our land lessees are recognized.
